Qantas replaces in-flight entertainment with iPads

Submitted by  on November 18, 2012 – 6:25 am

Qantas will be the first airline to fully replace their inflight entertainment technique with iPads. Passengers will have the capability of accessing Qantas’ personal entertainment system, QStreaming, via their iPads and will also have inflight wifi to check emails and surf the net.

Possessing flown Qantas several, several instances, I’m continuously unimpressed with their entertainment method. A number of occasions I’ve had the system crash and they have had to reset it. One time, they reset it and the complete program crashed for everybody on the plane. It was the most ridiculous issue, and a thing I’ve never ever skilled on Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines…not even Brunei Airlines.

So it will be nice to see Qantas lastly stepping up to the plate and providing a better inflight entertainment expertise for their consumers. Unfortunately for me, I normally fly international and the method is currently becoming introduced to their domestic flights only, on their B767 aeroplanes.

The program change is not only helpful in terms of staying competitive with Virgin, but it also saves on costs. The usual entertainment method in each and every chair weighs a whopping total of 2000kg. Replacing this with 375 of the new iPads (the max passengers on a B767) will be only 244kg. Aeronautically, that weight difference will result in a fairly minimal fuel saving, but in a planet exactly where airlines are competing in price tag for each dollar, each tiny bit counts.

Regardless of the expense savings it would merely be a a lot more wonderful technique. I last flew Qantas from Melbourne to Hong Kong and my system wasn’t working. Thankfully, I had my iPad, some thing I wanted to edit and a few movies loaded up so I was sweet the complete way. And it was way better than watching their useless entertainment technique.

I’d just like to know how they’re going to distribute them – can’t imagine the Qantas stewards and stewardesses will be carrying a bag of them down the aisle the way they do with the headphones. Perhaps in 1 of the food trolley sort issues? Either way, I’m all for this adjust! What do you guys believe?
