Italian Airline Deploys Xoom 2 for In-flight Entertainment, Customer Service

by Doug Drinkwater (TabTimes)

Italian airline Alitalia has become the latest airline to deploy tablets, with the firm now using Motorola’s Xoom 2 tablets for tracking flight and passenger information, as well as in-flight entertainment.

Motorola says that the 10.1-inch tablet will offer in-flight entertainment to Business and ‘Magnifica’ class passengers on select mid to long-distance flights, with this entertainment consisting of pre-loaded movies, music, magazines and games.

The tablets will also tip up at ten of Alitalia’s airport lounges, while crew members will use the Motorola devices to keep tabs on ‘high value customers’. In particular, staff will be able to use the tablets to check a customer’s preference for seating or food, or to just peruse their travel history.

This is by no means the first time an airline has taken the move to introduce tablets, as recent deployments have spanned from industry giants like American Airlines to smaller airlines based in CanadaSingapore and Australia.

Tablets are certainly in demand when consumers are up in the air as a recent report indicated a staggering one in 12 US flyers use a tablet when airborne.
